LARKANA: Rice growers of Larkana & Kambar-Shahdadkot districts have been protesting against very low rates of paddy and atrocities of rice millers to the growers.
It may be noted that the Sindh High Court Circuit Court, Larkana, has already ordered that paddy should be procured at the rate of Rs900 per 40 kg but it is yet to be implemented by the government functionaries as the traders are offering price of Rs600 to Rs700 per 40 kg which the growers have termed their exploitation.
In this connection, Deputy Commissioner Kambar-Shahdadkot, Capt. (Rtd) Anwar-ul-Haq, held meeting in his office on Wednesday with the growers Mir Ishaque Mugheri, Murad Pandrani, Abdul Khaliq Khoso, Najamuddin Abro, Liaquat Mugheri and traders including Manzoor Chandio, Ghulam Hyder Shaikh, Nadim Shaikh, Mohammad Hassan and others.
The growers repeated their complaints of paying low rates and unlawful deduction of paddy on arrival of the load at the rice mills and termed it wicked action. They also complained that they are not being given proper receipt of the sold crop.
DC, on hearing these complaints, directed the millers that no cutting of paddy will be tolerated and they should refrain from this practice in future adding proper receipt be issued to the peasants. He further directed them that SHC decision should be implemented in letter & spirit or else, he warned them, their licenses will be cancelled, mills will be sealed, FIRs lodged and their owners may also be arrested. DC directed all the Assistant Commissioners of the district to check the weighing material by visiting all the mills so that peasants should not suffer and send him detailed report.
Sindh Abadgar Board district President Ishaque Mugheri welcomed the decisions made in the meeting and said that if these are implemented will bring prosperity in the area. Rice Millers leader Manzoor Chandio said while talking to Reporters that they do not endorse the decisions made in the meeting as “their point of view was not heard in the meeting”, he added. He said that they have called for a grand meeting of the rice traders in which further line of action will be chalked out.
Meanwhile, in Larkana, the same meeting was also held under the chairmanship of DC and they also took same decisions but the traders & rice millers have announced to hold meeting of Sindh-Balochistan Rice Millers & Traders Association in Larkana wherein the issues will be discussed threadbare.
DC Javed Jagirani told reporters that decision against illegal cutting of paddy will be implemented at all costs. He said letter will be sent to the Sindh Government for fixing Rs:00 paddy price for 40 kg and other issues will also be raised before Sindh Chief Minister. He said he has already talked to Agriculture Secretary who has told him that paddy price issue will be discussed in the meeting which is soon to be held in Karachi.
