129 shopkeepers fined, five jailed

KARACHI:,,, In a massive crackdown against profiteers, 129 shopkeepers were charged with Rs278000 fine for selling commodities above government rates.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.

He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were high. These areas included Civil Line, Saddar, Garden, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Orangi Town, Liaquatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, New Karachi, Shah Faisal, Landhi, Bin Qasim and Korangi.

In the crackdown, 76 milkmen, 25 shopkeepers of general commodities, 24 chicken sellers, three vegetable sellers and a fruit seller were fined for selling essential items on excessive prices, while five persons were sent to jail for continuous violation.
