250 surgeries cancelled at JPMC, NICH

KARACHI: Over 250 scheduled surgeries were cancelled in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (PMC) and National Institute of Child Health (NICH) in last two days due to continued protest by young doctors and paramedics on second consecutive day on Tuesday.

Young Doctor Association, nurses and paramedics under the banner of Joint Action Committee of JPMC and NICH continued their protest demonstration and staged a sit-in outside the Najmuddin Auditorium demanding health allowance, increase in doctors’ stipend and regularization of neurosurgery employees.

The poor patients, especially coming from far-flung areas of Sindh, Balochistan, South Punjab and Karachi city, suffered a lot as a result.

Hundreds of patients have been returned to their homes hopelessly again without consultation and treatment due to the strike. The OPD services, X-ray department and other diagnostic facilities remained suspended which doubled miseries of the patients.

An administrative official at JPMC said hundreds of patients faced inconvenience and over 200 surgeries were cancelled in the hospital within two days due to protest by doctors and paramedics.

However, Executive Director at JPMC Prof Anis Bhatti and Deputy Director Admin Dr Jawaid Akhter Jamali again requested the Joint Action Committee members to call off their strike so that visiting patients do not suffer, but the protesting employees turned down the administration’s request.
