309 Karachi locations dangerous for traffic cops: DIG

KARACHI: After killing of six traffic constables in a week, the Karachi traffic police authorities wrote an official letter to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Hyder Jamali on Thursday, requesting him for the approval to depute Police and Rangers personnel for the security of traffic constables at 309 vulnerable points in different areas of the city on urgent basis.

Talking to reporter, DIG Traffic Dr Amir Ahmed said that viewing the security threats, traffic police have been withdrawn from some of the vulnerable places as they require arms and proper training for these constables. He said Karachi Traffic Police Department has only 3000 constables who are regulating the whole population of the city and this meagre strength is obviously not enough.

Amir told that they had demanded from authorities concerned to provide them enough weapons for security of traffic police as they were given only 67 SMGs with 1500 bullets, 139 9MM with 100 bullets, 243 revolvers with 3313 bullets and 300 bullet proof jackets which were distributed among traffic constables in all districts of the city.

He said criminals would not be allowed roaming free for long who were behind the killing of our soldiers. He said traffic police have already been laced with weapons but still they need proper training on weapons’ use on urgent basis so another official letter has also been written in this regard to DIG Headquarters.

He said people may face traffic jam issues while crossing those points from where traffic police are withdrawn on temporary basis due to security reasons but these cops would be sent back after completion of their training sessions and when they are given security cover by police and rangers soon.
