681 arrested, 422 jailed for violating traffic laws

KARACHI: Karachi Traffic Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested 681 traffic violators and jailed 422 of them within a week after it launched a crackdown in the city against errant drivers for violating one-way rule, carrying passengers on rooftops of mini busses, defying signal and plying illegal bike rickshaws.

In a report, Karachi Traffic Police said that as per the special directives issued by Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh, the Karachi traffic police would continue its drive against negligent drivers who are not following the traffic law in the city. It said that 422 arrested drivers were sent to jail for three to five days on the account of violation of traffic laws in different zones of the metropolis.

It said due to these negligent drivers, large number of people suffers traffic jams and these drivers cause 90 percent of accidents in the city. It said patrolling special traffic teams keep watch on traffic flow on different main roads including Shahra-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, University Road, Tariq Road, and many others.
