KARACHI: In a crackdown against profiteers, 76 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 108500 fine for selling commodities above government rates, while one other was jailed.
Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Bin Qasim and Korangi.
In the crackdown, 47 milkmen, 10 shopkeepers of general commodities, 10 chicken sellers, five vegetable sellers, one flour seller and two fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while one person was sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
