98 shopkeepers fined, 4 sent to jail

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at rates fixed by the administration.

He directed the officials to ensure that prices of commodities were displayed and stern actions against those involved in selling essential commodities at excessive prices were taken. He said that during the campaign, magistrates challaned 98 shopkeepers. Rs250500 fines were charged from different profiteers for selling commodities above rates fixed by the city administration.

He further said that city administration has focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas include Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal, Bin Qasim, Ibrahim Hyderi, North Nazimabad, New Karachi. Gulberg, Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Quarters, Garden, Civil Line and Aram Bagh.

In crackdown against profiteers, 65 milkmen, 02 fruit sellers, 08 vegetable sellers, 37 shopkeepers of general commodities, 01 meat sellers, 03 flour sellers, 22 chicken sellers have been fined on selling essential items on excessive prices, while, 04 persons were sent to jail for selling milk on excessive rates.
