KARACHI: Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhtar Farooqui said infrastructure of the city was being damaged due to 6 percent increase in the population of Karachi among other reasons, while the municipal resources were not increasing with the rate of population.
“KMC has to pay Rs1 billion as salary to its employees, whereas, its annual revenue is only 940million. How the city could be run in such conditions?” He said this while speaking a reception held in his honour by the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) (Southern Zone). Deputy Commissioner Korangi Nazir Ahmed, President PTA Gulzar Feroz, Iqbal Javed and other office bearers were also present on the occasion.
Farooqui said there should also be a debate to find out ways to get solution of the issues, besides just the efforts. The government of Sindh, chief minister, governor of Sindh and minister for local bodies were fully focusing it and patronizing us so that the problems in Karachi could be resolved and the citizens avail the facilities. Though uplift works being continued but some federal level package was required to fulfil the needs of the ever increasing population of Karachi.
He said the traders and industrialists were respectable members of our society and their problems should be solved.
“Innumerable mafias are operating in the city including tankers mafia, land mafia, katchi abadies mafia and others which are creating many problems,” he said.
The administrator said the resources of KMC were being raised by itself to bring improvement.
He said drains were occupied by high-rise structures and katchi abadies and big decisions were required to remove those illegal constructions.
Appreciating the services of administrative officers, Farooque said despite of limited resources they were working hard to yield results. Encroachments had been removed in many areas of the city including Superhighway and Saddar but this should be done on daily basis. We lost two of our officers in operations against encroachments. However, we will continue to focus this issue. He assured PTA all possible help and cooperation in bringing improvement in the area.
