Administrator laments peanut funding for Karachi

KARACHI: Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui has said that no single organization could be held responsible for all the issues in the city. The world over, megaprojects in big cities are built with the funding of federal government and, unfortunately, study of Karachi Mass Transit Program could not yet be completed since 1960.

“The legal rights with the administrator are so weak that he could not even ask district municipal corporations to better the cleaning in the city,” he said while addressing the participants of 18th Mid-career Management Course of National Institute of Management (NIM) at Civic Center on Saturday.

Financial Advisor Afaq Saeed, Senior Director Medical and Health Services Salma Kosar and other officers were also present on the occasion.

The administrator said the situation of the city started worsening after 1974 when resources were more and Karachi’s population was 2 million. While, in 2014 the resources had started reducing day by day and the population is over 25m.

Farooqui said according to worldwide norm big projects were funded by federal government, while, the situation for Karachi was different. However, the recent announcement by the prime minister for some projects was welcoming.

To a query, he said the Karachiites were being provided 300 million gallon water, while, the requirement was 1000 million gallons.

“The transport system before 1970 was better than today. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is working to upgrade public transport facilities through Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The study in this regard has been completed in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency and Yellow Line, Red Line and Green Line system would soon be brought to facilitate public,” he said.

The administrator said working on Yellow Line was almost complete and apart from that public CNG buses had already hit the road.
