KARACHI: An agreeable land fee for Bachat Bazaars in the city is going to be set by Enterprise & Investment Promotion (E&IP) department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) very soon by taking the Bachat Bazaar associations into confidence, said Deputy Director E&IP Salahuddin on Thursday.
The fee per square feet was last year bolted from Rs3 to Rs25 without taking the Bachat Bazaar associations into confidence, hence it was never paid and it resulted in resistance from them. Consequently, the associations filed a case against this decision and the matter still hangs in the balance, which the city administration wants to resolve at earliest.
“Soon next week a meeting will be held with the associations to decide an agreeable fee. The fee may be somewhat between Rs8 and Rs15/ sq ft,” he said.
The deputy director told PPI that they were receiving fee through court at Rs3/ sq ft until the case was finally settled.
A high official from the E&IP department told requesting not to be named that police were patronizing illegal Bachat Bazaars in return of bribe. “Every time an illegal bazaar would be removed, the rates of police would be increased.”
The official said the management of illegal Bachat Bazaars would take non-objection certificate from deputy commissioners, police and powerful political party of that area to establish the bazaars on KMC land.
