Karachi: Eighth seed Ahmed Chaudhry stunned third Mohammad Abid the quarterfinals of men’s singles event and secured an unexpected place in semifinals of Benazir Bhutto (Shaheed) Tennis Championship underway in Islamabad.
Ahmed played impressively in the last-eight stage and brushed aside better ranked player Abid recording a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory.
However, he will face uphill task in semifinals when he will take on favorite and Pakistan No 1 Aqeel Khan, who overpowered Heera Aashiq by 6-2, 6-0 score in quarterfinals.
Aqeel’s younger brother Yasir Khan, who is seeded fourth in the event defeated Muddassir Murtaza by 6-1, 6-2 score. He will face second seed Shezad Khan, who dispatched Usman Rafique recording a formidable 6-1, 6-1victory.
Meanwhile, Sarah Mansoor and Sarah Mehboob will vie for top honor in the ladies singles final. Sara Mansoor defeated Khunsha Baber by 6-1, 6-0 score while Sarah Mehboob overpowered Mahin Aftab by 6-0, 6-3 score in semifinals on Wednesday.
Aqeel Khan and Ahmed Chaudhry won the title of men’s doubles after they beat top seeds Shezad Khan and Yasir Khan in a well contested two-set match by 6-4, 6-4 score.
In the boys Under 18 event, Muzzamil Murtaza defeated Barkat ullah by 7-6(4), 6-4 score while Aman Atique recovered from a set down to beat Syed Nofil Kaleem by 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 score to set final date.
In Under 14 singles semifinals, Aaqib Umer defeated Hamza bin Rehan by 7-5, 6-3 score while Shoaib Khan beat stubborn Noman Aftab by 7-6(3), 7-6(2) score.
