Aqeel survives Muzammil scare in tennis tourney

Karachi: Pakistan No 1 tennis player Aqeel Khan was given tough time by fast improving top ranked junior player Muzamil Murtaza in men’s singles quarterfinals of 2nd Kulsum Saifullah Khan National Ranking Tennis Championships 2016 at Syed Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex in Islamabad.

In men’s singles quarters, Muzammil scared Aqeel Khan with his outstanding play as the spectators saw breathtaking baseline rallies in the first set, which Aqeel Khan won it in a tiebreak by 7-6 (5) score. Similar pattern of play continued in the second set also. However, it was Aqeel who played the crucial points well and won the second set 6-4 to secure his expected place in semifinals.

Aqeel Khan will meet Ahmed Chaudhry in the semifinals. Ahmed eliminated third seed Yasir Khan out of title race beating him by 6-0, 6-7(5), 6-1 score.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Abid dropped a set before beating Heera Ashiq by 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 score while Shahzad Khan overpowered Mudassar Murtaza by 6-3, 6-3 score.

In the Junior under 18 singles quarterfinals, 14-year-old seventh seed Shoaib Khan took full advantage of tiring top seed Mohammad Muzamil beating him by 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 score. Shoaib will now face third seed Haris Irfan ul Haq in the semifinals.
