Karachi: Pakistan’s top tennis player Aqeel Khan thrashed Mohammad Abid easily on the opening day of PTF Invitational Masters Tennis event on Thursday at the hard courts of Pakistan Sport Complex in Islamabad.
Aqeel found little resistance from Abid and pulled a formidable 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Matches of the tournament are played on round robin basis. All matches are best of five sets affair in order to provide competitive environment as that of Davis Cup.
In the second match of the day, Yasir Khan overpowered Asad Ali Siyyid, a youngster from Canada. It was evident that Asad had not fully recovered from stomach ailment since he came to Pakistan. Yasir took the advantage and won the first set by 6-3 score. In the second set, Asad looked dehydrated and was unable to play his natural game. Yasir took the next two sets by 6-2, 6-1 to seal the victory.
In the last match of the day, Mohammad Abid Ali Akbar beat Shahzad Khan by 7-6 (2), 1-0 (retired) score. In the first set, the score reached 6-6 all as both the players held their respective service games.
The set was decided on tiebreak, which was won by Abid Ali Akbar at 7-2. In the second set Abid Ali Akbar was leading 1-0 when Shahzad Khan retired from the match in favor of Abid on medical grounds.
