KARACHI: The shortage of medicines have been continuing in Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC-run Abbasi Shaheed Hospital as KMC management has failed to provide the required quota of medicine to this institution since last several years.
Reliable sources of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital here Saturday told PPI that there was an acute shortage of life-saving medicines at the hospital as KMC administration is not supplying required medicines to this major teaching hospital of Karachi for last several years.
They said emergency department of hospital is also facing shortage of medicines and patients with emergency requirements are left with no other option but to buy drugs from private medical stores.
Due to continuing medicine crisis, the number of OPD patients has also decreased in this 1000-beded hospital, while laboratory tests are also not being carried out in the healthcare over non-supply of X-ray films and other diagnostics kits.
Another administrative official of hospital on condition of anonymity said due to non-supply of drugs and unavailability of diagnostic facilities the patients generally prefer to go to other government-run hospitals of the city.
He said supply of food to admitted patients has also been stopped from August 2014 owing to financial crisis. He said despite all the problems the hospital administration is striving hard to provide all available treatment facilities to the poor patients from its limited resources.
He informed that approximately 2500 patient visit Outpatient Departments of hospital on daily basis and the hospital have capacity to house up 800 to 1000 patients. He further said hospital caters needs of patients from not only Karachi but also from interior parts of Sindh and Balochistan, and other parts of country.
Medical Superintendent Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Dr Imran Samdani when contacted said KMC administration has strictly restrained the heads of healthcare institutions from giving statement to media.
Senior Director Health & Medical Services Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Dr Salma Kausar Ali said due to fund shortage the administration is unable to supply 100 percent medicines to the hospital. However, she quickly added that supply of drugs and X-rays films is continued in all KMC-run hospitals.
She said it was unfair to say that the KMC had stopped supply of medicines to its hospitals; however, due to funds shortage the administration is unable to provide 100 percent quota of drugs to its healthcare institutions.
