Karachi: At least 16 people have died after consuming poisonous wine in Karachi, while many others are admitted, at least four of them in critical condition.
Dr Semin Jamali, incharge emergency department of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) confirmed the death of 16 people. The victims were mainly brought from the slum areas of Landhi and Korangi last night. Four people are still in critical condition.
However, sources said the deaths of poisonous wine in Karachi are in dozens, but many victims were not brought in hospitals.
It may be noted that recently more than two dozen people died in Hyderabad and Tandojam due to the use of poisonous wine.
The Sindh Excise and Taxation department is considered amongst the most corrupt departments of Sindh government. Recently, its minister Mukesh Kumar Chawala was changed, but it failed to bring any improvement in the performance of the department, as corrupt practices amongst its officers and staffers are deep-rooted.
