KARACHI: The management of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) has been facing multiple problems to run the hospital effectively as high-up Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and health department are not interested to address the problems of this important government-run healthcare institution, an official at ASH told PPI on Saturday.

He said six departments of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital including Radiology, Cardiology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Burns, and Neurosurgery are at the verge of closure due to shortage of specialist doctors and consultants. The junior doctors are running these departments due to unavailability of senior trained doctors.

The patients with plastic surgery, burns, cardio, and neurosurgery requirements were being referred to other hospitals due to lack of qualified experts in the respective departments, he said. New recruitment was done in the hospital four years back and since then no new doctor has been appointed.

The patients are facing hardship due to the dearth of specialist doctors, but the KMC administration and Sindh health department have miserably failed provide the qualified doctors to this institution to improve its patient care.

The CT scan machine of the hospital has been out of order for last few week and the administration is unable to get it repaired due to the shortage of funds. The shortage of drugs has also been continuing in the healthcare for several years, while the supply of diet to the admitted patients has already been stopped owing to the financial crisis.

Official said hospital administration is also facing acute shortage of staff nurses, ward boys and sweepers while the management unable to hire these employees on contract basis due to the financial issues.

Senior Director Medical & Health Services KMC Dr Salma Kausar Ali, when contacted, told PPI that the CT scan machine will be repaired soon after issuance of tender. She said posts of consultants are lying vacant after the retirement of senior doctors from the hospital but we cannot appoint new senior doctors on the vacant posts on contract basis due to our financial problems.
