Business leader flays rise in water tariff

KARACHI: Rise in water tariff by Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) for industrial consumers from Rs187 to Rs204 per thousand gallons without consultations with the stakeholders is an unjustified act, said Mohammad Jawed Bilwani, Chairman, SITE Association of Industry.

“This sudden increase of 9% in water tariff by KWSB for the industrial consumersis another blow to the Industries in Karachi. It is indeed most unfortunate that there is utter discrimination in the Water Tariff for the industrial Consumers of Karachi despite paying more than 50% of total taxes of the nation. The industries, in view of such discrimination and highest Water Tariff are finding that the cost of doing business is rising and this is compelling them to shift their industries from Karachi. Such a scenario will indeed be most devastating and create mass unemployment leading to chaos and serious law and order situation in Karachi,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said: “As it is, this highest water tariff will not only shoot up the rising cost of doing business but also make us uncompetitive within our own Sindh province because even the current water charges in Hyderabad is Rs25, which if compared with KWSB Water Tariff for the industrial Consumers at Rs204 per thousand gallons and is 716% higher than water charges in Hyderabad; Kotri is Rs33 and Nooriabad is Rs65 are much cheaper as compared to Karachi.”

He said that it is on record that water supply charges for KWSB Karachi from Kinjhar Lake through WAPDA (Kinjhar Gujjo Canal and Hub Dam) is merely 0.75 paisa per thousand gallons while KW&B water tariff for the industrial consumers is Rs204, which is a difference of Rs203.25.
