Business leaders demand military operation in Karachi

KARACHI: Business leaders on Sunday demanded Army cleanup operation in Karachi and asked Army Chief to play his role for deactivation of millions of illegal and unregistered mobile phone SIMs.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Expo Centre on the third and final day of My Karachi exhibition President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Amir Abdullah Zaki said that results of rangers and police operation in Karachi were not satisfactory and expectations from the ongoing operation were dying up.

He said that business community fully supported and appreciated the operation but law and order situation was still poor in the city and its only solution is army operation.

“Government has deployed Army in Islamabad but Karachi needs it more so an army operation should be conducted in Karachi,” he said and added that such army operation could be completed within 45 days.

Head of Businessman Group, Siraj Qasim Teli said that Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had ordered deactivation of Afghan SIMs in FATA but he was not giving attention to deactivation of illegal SIMs in Karachi and other parts of the country despite KCCI’s frequent demands for last six years. He requested the security agencies to play their role in getting deactivated the illegal SIMs.

Talking about My Karachi Exhibition, he said that this year around one million people have visited it. He said that main purpose of the exhibition was to promote a soft image of Karachi in the world.

He said that more than 30 exhibitors including foreigners participated in the event but delegations of some countries could not visit because of the terrorist attack on Karachi airport.

Vice President KCCI Muhammad Idress Khan and MPA Izhar-ul-Hasan were also present.
