Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has decided to put in place Primary Healthcare Committees for Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centre (RHCs) and Hospital Management Boards for Tehsil and District Headquarter Hospital (THQs/DHQs) of the province to involve maximum community participation and ownership with the aim to ensure efficient, uninterrupted and better healthcare service delivery in these health service delivery outlets.
The committees and boards will consist of concerned elected members provincial assembly, elected members of local bodies, local people of good repute and staff members of the health units. Work on the constitution of the proposed committees and boards is in final stages.
This was disclosed in a meeting held here on Wednesday with Provincial Senior Minister for Health, Shahram Tarakai in the chair. Secretary Health, Dr. Jamal Yousuf, Director General Health, Pervez Kamal and other high up attended the meeting. The chair was given a detailed briefing on the composition, powers, role and various other aspects of the proposed committees and boards.
It was informed that as per plan Primary Healthcare Management Committees have been proposed for BHUs and RHCs while Hospital Management Boards have been proposed for THQs and DHQs with representation from elected MPAs of the constituency, elected members of local bodies, local community and the health department as well.
It was further told that a fund amounting to Rs. 1.00 million per annum is proposed for each healthcare unit to be spent by the concerned committees or board on the repair of infrastructure, medical equipments and other urgent nature of works of the health unit to ensure uninterrupted health service delivery to the people.
Final approval of the committees and boards, its composition, powers, role and all other matters will be given by Chief Minister. The chair directed the authorities to develop a proper mechanism to ensure the transparent and efficient use of the funds to be given to these healthcare units.
