CM approves polls on vacant seats of LB

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch has accorded approval for completion of local bodies completion process and holding polls against vacant seats of kissans, labourers, Chairmen/Mayors, Deputy Chairmen /Deputy Mayors through Election Commission of Pakistan in the province.

It is added here that Balochistan is the first province which local bodies elections were held on Dec 7, 2014 following Supreme Court order in this connection. Supplementary elections were also held. However Balochistan Local Government Act and amendments in electoral laws were challenged in the High Court of Balochistan and elections against the reserved seats of kissans and workers and Chairmen/Deputy Chairmen, Mayors and Deputy Mayors could not be held.

High Court in its judgment on May 23, 2014 termed said amendments contrary to Constitution. This decision was challenged in the Supreme Court of Pakistan which was pending till October 2014.

Government of Balochistan has withdrawn its appeal owing delay in holding elections on reserved seats of kissans and workers and Chairmen/Deputy Chairmen, Mayors and Deputy Mayors and unrest prevalent among elected members of local councils.

Summary sent by Local Government and Rural Development Department to Chief Minister had sought approval which Chief Minister has accorded.
