KARACHI: Karachiites would still have to rely on water tankers, however, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has taken notice of water crisis in the city and water tanker mafia’s charging of desired amounts. Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) has been bounded to ensure selling of water tankers to citizens at government fixed prices.
He sought report on complaints of water shortage from high officials of KWSB in a meeting with them at his office on Tuesday. Deputy Managing Director Technical Services Iftikhar Ahmed Khan and head of water tanker department Rashid Siddiqui were also present.
Siddiqui said that water supply system should be improved after the operation against illegal hydrants and water tankers from government hydrants should be provided to consumers at government rates.
The government fixed rates for water tankers are as follows: a thousand gallon water tanker for Rs1200, a two thousand gallon water tanker for Rs1800 and a three thousand gallon water tanker for Rs 2400. Commissioner complaint cell could be contacted at 99203443, in case somebody asks for more money.
The water board told the meeting that four more hydrants were being constructed to make system of water provision better through hydrants. Two thousand water tankers were providing water to citizens as an alternative system.
The meeting decided that all the government water hydrants would work from 15 to 18 hours a day for better provision of service. Crackdown would be carried out against water tanker owners charging desired amount. KWSB should keep watch over underground system of water provision and stop water theft.
