Concerns on measles deaths in Sindh

KARACHI: Provincial Minister for Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar on Monday directed the Secretary Health and CEO EPI Program to submit a report regarding deaths caused by measles in Mirpurkhas and Shahdadkot within three days, stating what measures had been taken to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Presiding over a meeting at his office, he said that it was a matter of serious concern that two children had died of measles. He said concrete measures should be taken to prevent the disease from spreading to other areas.

He also directed the secretary health to meet out the shortage of doctors and paramedics in Civil Hospital Dadu and ensure proper attendance of the staff because he had received complaints that certain doctors had been on foreign leave.

He said there is no shortage of medicines in EPI Program and tenders have been published to purchase hepatitis vaccine on the court orders. He said that health department was handing over some hospitals to NGOs with a view to improve their working and the interest of the employees was the first priority of the department, no employee would be deprived of his job.

He said NGOs will manage the hospitals while employees would come under direct control of health department.
