Karachi: The historic eye hospital of Karachi, Spencer Eye Hospital, Lea Market, Lyari has become a cradle of corruption and the government should sack the corrupt officials and replace them with honest ones, demanded Pasban e Pakistan here on Sunday.
Pasban Karachi leader Akram Agaria said systematic destruction of Spencer Eye Hospital is a textbook example of corruption in Sindh healthcare institutes. He said funds of millions of rupees are being misappropriated and the general public is being denied from benefiting medical facilities in the government-run hospitals.
He said Pasban has raised a strong voice over rampant corruption in the Spencer Eye Hospital of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).and already staged a protest demo at Lea Market Chowk, which was participated by local residents and civil society
Agaria said the corrupt elements have turned the Spencer Eye Hospital, once the biggest eye hospital of the city, into a dispensary. He said medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Mohammad Anwar and other corrupt officers are responsible for the destruction of this eye healthcare facility.
He said the Spencer Hospital was founded in 1940 and people from all part of the country used to come here for eye treatment. This was the first hospital of Pakistan that successfully carried the first eye transplant surgery in the country. This hospital in past had introduced new methods of eye surgery and treatment. However, for past few years this hospital is facing immense problems. It lacks medicines and other facilities. The admitted patients are not being provided diet. The condition of hygiene and cleanliness is poor.
Akram Agaria regretted that the present medical superintendent Dr Mohammad Anwar has destructed the hospital and turned it into virtual a dispensary. Now the night shift is ended in the hospital, the patients coming from far flung areas of different provinces have been facing immense problems. The present medical superintendent has ended the Feco surgery and replaced it with manual stitches. He said the medical superintendent, accountant and other officers are involved in corruption. For last four years the budget of the hospital is being misappropriated.
However, Pasban leader Abid Baloch said very poor patients come to this hospital which should be given facilities. He said the ghost employees should be removed and management of this hospital should be improved.
The Pasban leaders demanded of the prime minister of Pakistan, chief minister Sindh, federal and provincial health ministers, Sindh local government minister, KMC administrator and commissioner Karachi that the corrupt medical superintendent should be removed and inquiry launched into financial corruption and take action against those responsible.
