Court: (SC rejects petitions against 18th, 21st Amendments)

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected petitions filed against the 18th and 21st Constitutional Amendments. A 17-member full court bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk heard the case. Announcing the verdict, the bench ordered to keep the military courts intact.

Out of 17 judges, 11 gave their decision in favour of military courts. 14 judges gave their verdict in favour of 18th Amendment while three opposed.

24 applications were submitted with reference to 18th Constitution amendment while 17 applications challenged 21st Constitutional Amendment. The stay order against implementation of punishments awarded by military courts has also been vacated.

The military courts had awarded death sentences to six terrorists. The Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association had challenged the 18th and 21st Amendments to the Constitution. Both the apex bar associations have decided to file review petitions against the apex court verdict.
