ISLAMABAD: International Anti-Corruption Day is being observed today (Wednesday) (December 9) under the auspices of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to raise awareness against corruption all over the world.
Corruption is a serious crime that can undermine social and economic development in all societies. This year theme of the day is “Break the Corruption Chain”. This year joint international campaign focuses on how corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law and threats to human security to flourish.
The campaign break the chain also highlights that action against corruption is imperative to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the UNODC as secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4).
The Assembly also designated December 09 as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it. The Convention entered into force in December 2005.
