Defence (Mr Nicholas Haysom calls on Secretary Defence)

Rawalpindi: Mr. Nicholas Haysom, UN Special Representative of Secretary General (SRSG) called on Secretary Defence Lt Gen (Retd) Mohammad Alam Khattak here in his office on Thursday. The meeting was significant in highlighting Pakistan’s role in the region as a stabilizing force.

Both sides agreed that after the drawdown of NATO & ISAF Forces from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan will have to chart a way forward to collectively counter the menace of terrorism and therefore role of Pakistan in this regard carries a significant importance.

The visiting delegate was briefed on operation Zarb-e-Azb and other efforts Pakistan is making in countering the threat of terror. Sacrifices of the Armed Forced and people of Pakistan in terms of men & money were also highlighted by Secretary Defence.

He stressed that Pakistan is fighting the threat of terror through a comprehensive strategy and expressed the desire for a consolidated regional effort from all stakeholders to overcome this menace.

He added that as a result of the operation the challenge of displaced persons is taking the toll on Pakistan’s economy. However, Government of Pakistan is fully committed to rehabilitate them in a befitting manner.

The visiting dignitary appreciated the efforts of Pakistan in curbing the extremism. Issue of Afghan refugees in Pakistan was forcefully raised with UN Special Representative who acknowledged that necessary arrangements are a must for the return of refugees and necessary conditions need to be created inside Afghanistan.

It may be noted that Pakistan has been hosting a large number of Afghan Refugees since long and Afghanistan must seriously work towards their repatriation.

Both sides candidly shared views on internal and regional security dynamics. Meeting proved beneficial in showing Pakistan’s point of view on a variety of issues of national interest.
