KARACHI: International Women Day, 2015 was celebrated by Directorate of Women Development Sindh on Monday.
In-charge Women Complaint Cell Karachi Tehmina Rehman highlighted the overall outstanding achievements of women of Islamic world and especially from sub-continent and Pakistan. She also described all the efforts of the women development department and directorate since its inception till the date.
“The main purpose of this program on the eve of International Women DAY, 2015 is to recognize the struggle and achievements of the women and also appreciate the role of women in the society,” she said.
Representative of an NGO Anjum Wasi highlighted the issues/ hardships faced by women outside home and at workplace. She also gave examples of the Holy wives of the Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) and specially Hazrat Bibi Khatija (RA), who was a businesswoman.
She said that women and men both were in need of each other, so both had to contribute equally to the society and at home.
Acting Manager SBBCW Karachi Urooj Javed spoke regarding the efforts of the directorate of women development for women and so far events arranged by the department. She said that gender balance must exist in the society. The department empowered women in distress by giving them free legal assistance and counselling.
Legal Officer SBBCW Karachi Ms Zaib said that women centres were working to stop violence and abuse against women and for providing free legal aid to poor women to resolve their problems and be aware of their legal rights.
Additional Secretary Women Development Department Sindh Mohammad Hanif Merchawala said that the women development department was working for the empowerment of women. The women force held over 50 percent of our population, hence their role in national growth was vital.
“The women development department has initiated several projects to bring about the changes for legal, political, economic and culture empowerment of women,” he said.
He highlighted all the efforts of the department to achieve by passing the Acts so far, such as: protection against Harassment of Woman at Workplace Act,2010; Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act,2014; provincial home-based women workers policy(draft has submitted to chief minister Sindh).
Program was started with recitation of surah from the Holy Quran by Urooj Javed.
