Dozens of diagnostics tests postponed in CHK

KARACHI: The process of carrying out diagnostic tests and investigation procedures was partially affected in Central Laboratory of Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) as some air-conditioners developed faults in the lab, sources at CHK told PPI on Wednesday. Specific temperature control is necessary for many sensitive laboratory tests.

They said many important diagnostics and investigations tests in Central Laboratory of the Civil Hospital Karachi were partially affected as various air-conditioners developed technical faults, causing serious inconvenience to the patients.

The Central Laboratory is a well equipped diagnostic centre having facilities including Hematology, Biochemistry, Molecular Pathology and General Pathology tests and it caters thousands of patients.

Dozens of diagnostic tests were postponed due to fault in air-conditioners, causing misery to patients visiting the Out Patients Departments (OPDs) of the hospital.

The sources said PCR and other diagnostics tests were also not carried out for last few days. They said hospital administration could not arrange alternate air-conditioners to maintain specific temperature necessary by performing tests in labs.

Patients are left with no choice but to get their tests done at costly private laboratories. The hospital administration has not been paying heed on the matter, making poor patients to suffer the most.

A laboratory administration official informed that hundreds of tests are conducted on daily basis at the central laboratory which are now been temporarily postponed. He said the efforts were under way to get repaired the air-conditioners as soon as possible.

Medical Superintendent Civil Hospital Karachi Prof Saeed Qureshi, when contacted, said the hospital administration is installing new air-conditioners in the central laboratory, owing to which some diagnostics tests are delayed. He said the new air-conditioners will be installed in the laboratory within a week.
