KARACHI: Action against reckless drivers of four wheeler vehicles begins from Monday in the metropolis.
Stern action would be taken against the drivers, if they were seen driving their vehicles without valid licences or having bogus ones, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Sunday.
Talking to PPI, DIG said at least 15 teams have been formed under the campaign of checking online driving licences of drivers through a Ufone special SIMs only inserting person’s computerized national identification card number that would access one’s complete details along vehicles and criminal details. He said if any driver found guilty of carrying a fake license or driving without a valid licence, a tough action would be taken against them including imprisonment and impounding of their vehicles.
Dr Amir said in the first phase they are going to take action against only four-wheel vehicles including car, trucks, dumpers, minibuses, water tankers, and other heavy vehicles along different roads including Bilawal Chowrangi Clifton area, Korangi Road, University Road, MA Jinnah Road, Shahra-e-Pakistan, Hub River Road, Kala Board Bus Stop, Mauripur Road, Fatima Jinnah Road, Aga Khan-III Road and Nawab Siddique Khan Road.
DIG said that driving vehicles without licences is an offence as they are putting their and others lives at high risk.
He said in the first phase of the drive, motorcyclists will be exempt from the checking of licences but the bikers are advised to get their valid licences as soon as possible. He said those who have old version of licences issued by Karachi licence department would be allowed to drive their vehicles but it would be better if they get renewal of their licences from concerned department.
He said they have already written an official letter to IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali and Karachi AIG Mushtaq Mahar had requested them to help traffic police making successful of drive against reckless drivers by sending extra contingent of policemen on the said spots.
