KARACHI: The country’s economic growth could be possible on sustainable basis only if consumer rights are protected in letter and spirit with emergence of competitive environment in markets of goods and service.
This was stated by Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar while speaking as a chief guest at the 9th Consumers Choice Awards organized by Consumers Association of Pakistan (CAP) at a local hotel here on Wednesday.
He said the consumer courts should be established and empowered to protect the rights of the consumers in the country whereas companies of different sectors should ensure their rights keeping in mind that these people were their business partners whose contribution were vital in development and growth of their business.
He said the consumer rights protection should be priority of the government because these were people who elected their representatives and ultimately the government, hence, it was prime responsibility of the policymakers to come up with regulation framework to ensure consumers rights in the country.
Sarwar further said the consumer rights protection was vital for the country to bring investment in the country because it leads to bring competition in different fields of business and benefits to layman in terms of high quality in the products and services against reasonable prices and charges.
Governor Punjab added that reputed multinational companies should ensure compliance to consumer rights in their operations and business because they believed that their success lied in the satisfaction of their partners.
He added that awareness for consumer rights was indispensable through various seminars and conference and the role of CAP was laudable for its continuous and tireless efforts in playing constructive role in the society.
The ceremony concluded with the distribution of awards to different companies having exemplary role in assuring rights of consumers with their goods and services.
Rauf Siddiqui, Provincial Minister for Trade and Industries, said the multinational and national companies should enhance their level of production and services for fulfilling the needs of the consumers amid gratifying experience.
He urged companies to extend their cooperation to consumers association which was the best in the interest of their business and image.
Kaukab Iqbal Chairman Consumers Association of Pakistan and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar Provincial Minister for Food also addressed the participants. Prominent personalities also attended the event including Akhtar Farooqui, Administrator KMC and Shoaib Siddiqui, Commissioner Karachi and etc.
