Excise dept to burn 544 kg drugs after Ramazan

KARACHI: Excise Department Karachi Director Noor Mohammad Odhano has said that the department would burn 544 kg of drugs confiscated during raids in Karachi after Ramazan.

Talking to PPI, Odhano said that the drugs which would be burn included 420.431 kg of charas, 4.125 kg heroin, 120 kg bhang while the department would also destroy 127 bottles having 252 liters of illicit liquor. “We have informed higher excise authorities regarding burning narcotics material which is cleared from courts,” he said.

He said that the excise department was carrying out raids in different localities in the metropolis to end this menace while strict checking was also ensured on the city outskirts in order to nab people involved in smuggling these products within the city.

Giving details of his directorates performance from July 2013 to May 2014, he said that they had confiscated 90 kg of heroin, 28 kg of charas, 10 kg of bhang, 12 bottles of imported liquor, 1297 liters of different local liquor and 40 bottles of bear.

“We have also seized different vehicles involved in smuggling narcotics which include a Parado Jeep, a car, a taxi, two motorcycles and a rickshaw,” he said adding that 90 kg of heroin was recovered from the Parado jeep.

He said that the department had also arrested 63 people involved in smuggling narcotics and liquor, which were later handed over to police which then registered 61 cases against them.

He said that massive awareness campaigns were carried out in the city regarding the hazards of the narcotics on the eve of World Anti-Narcotics Day which included posting banners and distributing pamphlets at bus stops and traffic signals.
