Financial crisis hits fumigation drive in Karachi

Karachi:,,, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has stopped the fumigation drive against dengue and other vector diseases due to financial crisis, reliable sources told PPI on Monday.

They said as the KMC management fail to pay the dues of petrol pumps therefore the owners of pumps suspended supply of petrol and diesel to the KMC vehicles taking part in fumigation campaign in Karachi city about 90 days ago. Hence the 25th round of anti-dengue fumigation could not kick off.

The sources said the fumigation was carried out in some areas of Lyari and Saddar Town on 28 April 2014 last time but the next round of spray could not begin in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Jamshed Towns due to the financial crisis of KMC.

Health experts have shown concern over suspending the spray drive and said uninterrupted fumigation was vital to combat dengue and other vector diseases. They feared the dengue might take an epidemic shape in coming months if the fumigation and other preventive steps are not practically implemented in Karachi.

According Dengue Prevention and Control Program Sindh report a total six people died and 256 dengue viral fever cases reported in 2014 so far. The dengue claimed 32 lives last year and infected around 6,000 in Sindh province, a vast majority of them in Karachi.

Director Media Management KMC Bashir Khan Sadozai, when contacted, said fumigation campaign is continues in the city as per schedule. He admitted there is financial crisis in KMC but added that necessary projects like fumigation could not stop due the shortage of funds.

He informed that two rounds of fumigations drive are held each month in different towns of Karachi. He vowed that fumigation drive would continue without any hurdle as per schedule.
