Five model dental clinics project in jeopardy

KARACHI: The fate of the health department’s project to establish five ‘model dental clinics’ in various areas of Karachi is hanging in balance as the provincial government is reluctant in making them functional yet.

Sources at health department Sindh whish not be named said the department in order to provide better treatment facilities to patients with dental diseases had decided to established model dental clinics in five districts of Karachi comprises on six dental chairs each a few year ago. The project would have been made functional previous year but these clinics could not make functional so far due to the reasons best known to bureaucracy.

These model dental clinics were scheduled to be established in dispensaries in Korangi, Gharibabad, Malir, Lyari and Sadder. The plan also was made to up-grade these clinics into Oral Hygienic Clinics after making them fully functional where maxillofacial surgery facilities to be provided to patients. However, even the initial project could not be started as yet.

Sources said many private dental clinics established in various parts of city have become major sources of hepatitis and other diseases prevalence, as they use unhygienic dental instruments. In these circumstances, there is urgent need of establishment of these model dental clinics in Karachi to cater dental patients, as quack dentists are playing with their health and lives. They said dentistry is a complete medical subject and treatment of different dental diseases is very costly in private sector.

Director Health Karachi Dr Zafar Ejaz, when contacted, said the model dental clinics project had been initiated by the health department Karachi on self-help basis. He said a model dental clinic has been made functional in Orangi Town, recently, while two clinics in Gharibabad and Malir would be made operational within a month.

He said the rest of clinics would also be made functional soon. He said efforts are under way to engage non-governmental organizations for establishment of the dental and diabetes clinics in the government-run dispensaries of Karachi in order to provide better healthcare facilities at grassroots level.
