Karachi: Chairperson and Head Department of Cardiology Civil Hospital Karachi Prof Dr Khalida Soomro on Wednesday said gamma camera is the safest test for patients suffering heart diseases.
She told PPI here that latest gamma camera technology was first time introduced in Civil Hospital Karachi in October 2013 and hospital has become the country sole healthcare instantiation that offers latest gamma camera test for people with heart diseases on lower rates as compared to private sector.
She informed that about 741 tests have been conducted so far and five to seven patients suffering from heart diseases are facilitated through this test on daily basis. She said gamma camera test is very expensive in private sector that cost Rs 20,000 to 25,000 per patient, while the CHK charges only Rs 4500 from each patient.
She said gamma camera test is every effective for patients suffering from veins complications and who faced cardio-arrest earlier. She explained that a gamma camera is a device used to image gamma radiation emitting radioisotopes.
She said gamma camera test is conducted with consultation of nuclear physicians after reading the family history of patients. She said nuclear cardiology is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose heart diseases and is often paired with stress testing procedures.
She said nuclear cardiac gamma camera is a major advance in nuclear cardiac imaging. She said with this technology the imaging time is reduced compared to older cameras, which make the procedure more comfortable for patients.
Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) CHK Muhammad Tariq said this innovative technology improves patient comfort, decreases imaging time, and maintains a very high level of diagnostic accuracy. He said the new technique is provided through our specialized staff of physicians, nurses and technologists with a flexibility to use a variety of imaging protocols that can be tailored for specific patient in order to provide the best possible nuclear cardiac stress test with the lowest possible risk.
He said this gamma camera is unique ability to acquire high quality cardiac images, while at the same time improving patient’s comfort and keeping radiation exposure to a minimum. He said this technology allows us to keep the radiation dose as low as possible while providing patients with state-of-the-art stress cardiac nuclear imaging in a patient-friendly, comfortable environment.
