Governor inaugurates DUHS’s Bariatric Surgery Centre

KARACHI: Governor Sindh & Chancellor Dow University of Health Science(DUHS) Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan on Tuesday said liver transplant project of university will largely benefit not only the people of Sindh province but also whole Pakistan.

He shared these views while addressing inaugural ceremony of Bariatric Surgery Centre of DUHS at Governor House Karachi. Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof Masood Hameed Khan, Prof Mohammad Jawaid, Prof Umer Farooq, Justice (R) Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui and Dr Faiz ur Rehman were also present.

Dow University for first time in public sector established Bariatric Surgery Centre to offer weight reduction program including surgical option.

Governor said liver translation project will be made functional soon in the university and project will prove a millstone for the people of the country. He said people from all over the country will benefit from this liver transplant project in near future.

He said obesity is a becoming a major healthcare problem worldwide and has reached an epidemic proportion. Evidence continues to accumulate that obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. He said Bariatric Surgery is currently the only modality that provides a significant, sustained weight loss for the patients who are morbidly obese.

He further acknowledged the philanthropic efforts of Dr Faiz ur Rehman who has donated his personal property located in thickly area of Karachi, where healthcare services are much needed. In the building donated by him the Dow University will extend the healthcare services including diagnostic facilities.

Prof Masood Hameed recounted the progress of the university since its inception. He also highlighted the development of the university.

Prof Mohammad Jawad said that in an estimate 1.5billion people are obese worldwide. Obesity is a healthcare issue that has attracted concern only in the past few years.

Bariatric Surgery Centre of DUHS has already started sleeve gastrectomy which is highly safe and effective in losing weight. The centre has already carried out 20 surgeries which left negligible scare.

Earlier, Dr Faiz-ur-Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

Later on, Prof Masood Hameed Khan presented DUHS memento to Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan.
