KARACHI: Around 450 male nursing students of three different male school of nursing institutions have been deprived of their stipends for last three years, sources of School of Nursing, Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad told PPI new agency on Saturday.
Sources said around 450 nursing students of three different schools of nursing in Karachi have deprived been their stipends for last three years due to non-release of funds from provincial health department and Drawing & Disbursing Officer (DDO) powers issues.
They informed that the 150 students of School of Nursing, Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad, 150 students of School of Nursing, Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital and 150 students of School of Nursing Sindh Government Hospital Korangi are deprived of their monthly stipends.
These students have been performing duties at different wards of these healthcare facilities in the day and night shifts for the last three years but unfortunately they are still deprived of their stipends. The provincial government had announced Rs7620 monthly stipend for each male nursing student but the students are not getting it for various reasons.
Sources informed they had brought the issue to the notice of the School of Nursing administration and other high-ups on various occasions but to no avail. They said: “there are five female schools of nursing in Karachi and all their students are getting stipends on regular basis month but only male nursing students were deprived of it.
They demanded of the Health Minister Sindh and Secretary Health to play their due role for the release of their stipends otherwise they will be compelled for protest and observe hunger strike to get their rights.
General Secretary, Provincial Nurses Association (PNA) Karachi Division, Abdul Wahid, when contacted, held the schools’ administration responsible for the crissi and stoppage of students’ stipend.
He said health and finance departments Sindh have been releasing funds to the schools on quarterly basis but incompetent administrations of these institutions were not submitting quarterly report to the finance department which was major reason behind this crisis.
Assistant Director, Directorate of Nursing Sindh, Khair-un-Nisa said administration of School of Nursing Korangi had completed its work and obtained the Drawing & Disbursing Officer (DDO) powers. She said nursing students are now getting monthly stipends in School of Nursing Korangi.
She said administrations of School Nursing Liaquatabad and Lyari could not complete their home work thus the students of these two institutions are still deprived of their stipends. She said there was no shortage of funds from the government side.
