IGP orders preparation of Muharram contingency plan

KARACHI: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, Gulam Haider Jamali, on Sunday ordered preparation of Muharram-ul-Haram 2014 Contingency Plan (SOP) to control terrorism and sectarianism across Sindh province.

He said that police must be engaged with inelegance sharing information and given responsibility to control sectarianism during Muharram-ul-Haram.

He further said that under the contingency plan, police commandos, specialized units, special branch, crime branch, CID, CIA, AVCC, SIU and other police officials should be assigned special tasks for ensuring security across the province.

He said survey of mosques and imambargahs be conducted at police range level and extraordinary security should be ensured for them by categorizing them as normal, sensitive and extremely sensitive.

Jamali said that meetings with all stakeholders should be scheduled and all steps taken to ensure interfaith harmony and to stop displaying of handbills, wallchalking and other material that provokes sectarianism.

IGP said that all exit and entry points of the cities and the province should be monitored by establishing checkpoints, while checking should be made strictly and impartially, besides keeping strict vigillance on pedestrian routes and ground areas of the border.
