KARACHI: IG Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali along with Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other senior officers visited different areas of the city to review the security arrangements made for mourning processions and congregations on the eve of Youm-e-Ashur.
Thebo said, according to the zonal police report, more than 573 congregations would be held by Shia community and over 45 by Sunni school of thought, while including the central procession, the number of processions would be around 330 in which the processions organized by Sunni school of thought would be over 225.
To maintain law and order situation in the city, 25000 policemen would perform duties on Youm-e-Ashur. The additional police contingent have been taken from CID, SRP and RRF, while for the security of central meetings and processions, police commandos and elite force had been posted on the sensitive locations.
The IG was told that the sealed shops and vacant flats/ houses along the route of central procession were being watched through senior officers and snipers posted on high-rise buildings, while special steps had been taken for coordination among police officers for central procession and head & tail, so that the orders issued after monitoring from central command and control center could be followed timely.
“Intelligence collection and sharing is also being ensured around central congregations and processions, while bomb disposal squad teams were on a front line for sweeping, cleaning and clearance. Physical searching of the participants through walk-though gates and metal detectors installed along the central routes of Nishter Park and Hussainia Iranian Imambargah were being carried out in cooperation with the procession management,” he was told.
Jamali directed to deploy trained police officers with advance weapons along central processions and in possible sensitive areas apart from patrolling of police commandos.
He said that in case, any suspected person or thing is found it should immediately be informed to police officers.
