Jam Mehtab concerns over increase of AIDS, hepatitis cases

KARACHI: Provincial Minister for Health, Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar on Thursday expressed deep concerns over increasing number of patients of AIDS and hepatitis in the province and directed the Program Managers to expedite immunization process against these fatal diseases.

This he said while presiding over a meeting here at his office here. Dr Younus Chachar Program Manager AIDs Control and Dr Abdul Khaliq Shaikh Program Manager Hepatitis Control also attended the meeting.

He directed them to launch a massive drive against these diseases and create awareness at grass root level. Unless we do hard work we cannot achieve our goal

Program Manager AIDs told the meeting that so far 8,872 cases of HIV positive and 235 cases of AIDs had been reported officially but it was feared that number of cases might be up to 40,000.

Jam Mehtab urged upon them to establish Prevention and Care Centres in all districts of the province and in most affected areas at Tehsil level as well to zero tolerance against these diseases.

He also urged the education ministry to include awareness lessons on diseases like AIDs, hepatitis, dengue in curriculum to create awareness among students.

Manager Hepatitis Control Program Dr Khaliq Shaikh informed the meeting that till 15 October 214,966 hepatitis diagnosed patients had been registered, out of which 169,739 were provided treatment while 77,89,445 people were vaccinated against hepatitis.
