Lahore: Secretary General, Jamaat e Islami, Liaqat Baloch, has called for holding local bodies elections in Islamabad and the cantonments on party basis to be in harmony with the party-based parliamentary system running in the country.
In a statement here on Monday, he said that the local governments were the nursery for the national politics and local bodies elections in all the provinces were being held on party basis. As such, the decision to hold LG elections in the federal capital and the cantonments on non-party basis was unwise and an attempt to influence the public opinion.
Meanwhile, the election cell of the JI at its meeting here reviewed the preparations of the party for the local government elections in the provinces and the federal capital. The JI planned to participate in the elections fully. The JI leadership in the provinces and at district level has been authorized to decide their strategy for electoral cooperation with the other parties.
Liaqat Baloch said at the meeting that after the 2013 general elections, holding fair, impartial and transparent local government polls would be a big challenge for the Election Commission, and it should not allow the provincial governments to influence the LB polls. He stressed that the voters lists, delimitations of the constituencies and the polling scheme should be prepared according to electoral requirements discarding all political pressure.
