KU closed following murder of professor

Karachi: Karachi University students help protest demos and rallies following the murder of a professor, while the administration announced that varsity would be closed on Thursday, April 30 to mourn the killing of its teacher.

Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT), People’s Students Federation (PSF) and students of Mass Communication Department staged a protest demonstration at University of Karachi campus against the targeted killing of Assistant Professor Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman, who was gunned down in Dastigir area Wednesday.

Hundreds of students including girls displaying placards and banners shouted slogans against culprits. They strongly condemned the targeted killing of Assistant Professor Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman of Mass Communication, University of Karachi.

They said their teacher was shot dead in FB Area, Block 16 by unidentified persons in morning. They said the police and law enforcing agencies have still to make Karachi a targeted-killing free city.

Talking PPI a Student of Mass Communication Mohammad Muoman showed serious concern over the killing of his teacher and demanded of the Sindh Government to take notice of this broad daylight murder.

Several vehicles were stuck in heavy traffic jam on both sides of the Main University Road due to two hour-long protest demonstrations outside KU’s Main Gate. Protesters demanded urgent action against culprits and bring them to justice.

The protest was led by IJT’s President Qazi Hasib, Mohammad Nuoman, PSF’s President Syed Aman, and Waseem. The protest was also joined by Chairman of Mass Communication Department Mahmud Gaznavi, lecturer Naveed Arshad and other teachers.

On the other hand, University of Karachi’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Qaiser strongly condemned the killing of Dr Waheed and demanded from the government to take action against culprits.

However, the administration of KU suspended academic and non-academic activities after getting the sad news of the murder of Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman and announced that on April 30, 2015, the varsity would be closed to mourn the slain teacher.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Federal Urdu University of Science, Arts and Technology’ (FUUSAT) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal and Pakistan Teachers Association Sindh President Professor Abu Amir Azmi, Pasban President Altaf Shakoor and other leaders expressed grief over the s killing of Assistant Professor Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman. They prayed for the departed soul.
