KWSB demolishes illegal water storage facility

KARACHI: In a major action taken against illegal hydrants in the city, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) on Tuesday demolished a three-storey building having two underground floors in Banras Colony.

According to KWSB Spokesman, acting on the directions of KWSB MD Qutubuddin Shaikh, the officials raided an illegal water storage facility in Banaras. The facility was built on 2000 square-yards and comprised of one ground floor and two underground basements for storage of water.

The ground floor consists of shops while the underground floors consist of hidden water storage facilities having capacity to store 100,000 gallon and 200,000 gallons of water, respectively. The KWSB officials also cut four illegal connections taken from 12-inch diameter main trunk line.

He said that millions of gallons water was stolen from this water line and its demolition would be helpful in ensuring better supply of water in the city.

He said that the current operation was conducted with the cooperation of Deputy Commissioner South and concerned police officials.

Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Local Bodies Sharjeel Memon has applauded efforts of KWSB officials in taking strict action against illegal hydrants and connections. He directed officials to continue their actions against people involved in stealing water without accepting pressure from any quarter.

He said that Sindh government had promised to provide water to Karachiites and no one would be tolerated in this regard.
