KWSB mulls over solar system for pumping stations

KARACHI: Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) mulls over feasibility of PV solar system as an alternative power supply to control water shortage which happens due to power breakdowns at its important pumping stations.

Managing Director KWSB Sajjad Hussain Abbasi on Monday directed to prepare feasibility report of PV solar system so that water supply could not be disturbed in the city.

“The officers of KWSB should bring their professional expertise into use to make water supply system more alive,” he said while addressing a meeting at his office after taking charge of managing director KWSB.

He said the water board should get services of two special magistrates on permanent basis for operation against illegal hydrants and recovery so that recovery of arrears and operation against water theft could be expedited under new ordinance. KWSB should contact law minister in this regard, said he.

Deputy managing directors, chief engineers, directors and other officers were also present on the occasion.

The MD KWSB directed that the water and sewerage lines that were older than 30 years should be replaced. Immediate planning should be made by making cost estimation for this so that the federal government and other sources could be contacted for funding.

“Replacement of old lines would not save water wastage but sewerage system would also be improved. There has become a wider gap between demand and supply of water which should be taken over,” he said.

Abbasi said the water supply project of K-IV and water drainage project of S-III should be completed with transparency.

He said on the directives of Supreme Court of Pakistan more than 200 illegal hydrants had been demolished in the city and this operation would continue.
