Majority of KPK in favour of Kalabagh Dam

LAHORE: A big majority in Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa province is in favour of Kalabagh Dam that can be proved by holding a Referendum.

This was stated by the President Mardan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Zahir Shah while talking to LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari during a visit to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday. LCCI Vice President Kashif Anwar, Executive Committee Members Mian Zahid Javaid and Talha Tayyab Butt and founding president of MCCI Haji Sultan were also present on the occasion.

The MCCI President said that Kalabagh Dam should be built without any further delay as it is the lifeline of Pakistan economy. He said that Mardan Chamber of Commerce would be at the forefront if a movement to pave the way for construction of KBD is launched.

Zahir Shah appreciated the efforts of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the cause of the Dam and for promotion of trade and economic activities in the country. He said that the devastating floods in the yester years had taught a lesson to the people of KPK that construction of water reservoirs was the only solution to avoid any such eventuality in future.

The MCCI President said that the Mardan chamber would work hand in hand with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry to develop a consensus among all the federating units for the early construction of KBD. He said that the dam had been politicized for nothing.

He said that the LCCI FM Radio was a positive step of the Lahore Chamber as through this medium, the business community problems were fast reaching the concerned quarters.

The LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari said that for the first time, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry had constituted a Committee on Kalabagh Dam having a number of renowned experts in its fold. The committee has been tasked to evolve its recommendations for early development of the mega project of vital national importance.

The LCCI President also informed the MCCI delegation about the establishment of Mediation centre at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with International Finance Corporation of the out–of-court settlement of business disputes.

The LCCI President also took them on board on LCCI initiative about Public Private Dialogue saying that the LCCI was striving to promote this concept to ensure letter and spirit implementation of all the economic policies. He said that in the modern world Public Private Dialogue was in vogue and Pakistan government would have to adopt the same mode to achieve desired economic goals.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mardan Chamber of Commerce and Industry inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to wage joint efforts and pool their resources for the promotion of trade and industry in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

As per MoU, both the chambers would evolve a unified strategy on the issues of common interest, share and exchange all trade-related data with each other for increasing competitiveness of goods and reducing cost of doing business.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mardan Chamber of Commerce will cooperate in preparation of proposals for Excise and Taxation matters, budgetary recommendations and other national policies.
