Man gets 12-year term in extortion, weapon cases

KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday awarded 12-year collective imprisonment to convict Gul Nawaz in money extortion and illicit weapon possession cases.

The ATC found Gul Nawaz guilty of demanding extortion of Rs 15,000 from complainant Sikandar on 25 September 2013 and hurling threats of killing him in case of non-payment.

ATC judge pronounced the verdict after recording evidence, statement of witnesses, and hearing arguments from both sides.

According to the prosecution, the accused demanded extortion of Rs 15,000 from complainant Sikandar who was a plastic merchant. The complainant called the suspect to come and collect extortion amount on 25 September 2013 and in the mean time, he also reported the matter to police which reached the scene and arrested the accused red handed. The police also seized a TT pistol from convict possession.

The ATC judge awarded five-year imprisonment in extortion case and seven-year in illegal weapon possession case. Both the convictions would undergo simultaneously. The court also extended the 382-B CrPC to the convict which means his sentence would be count from the day of his arrest.
