Manhandling of sugarcane growers condemned

Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Sindh chapter amir Dr Merajul Huda Siddiqui here Friday strongly condemned the manhandling of sugarcane growers in Karachi who were protesting against inordinate delay in announcing the support price of sugarcane by the government.

In a statement he said not announcing proper support price of sugarcane is not only economic genocide of sugarcane growers of Sindh but also a contempt of court. He said in the KpK province the government has taken stern steps to start sugarcane crushing on time, besides giving growers a proper support price. However, in Sindh the government is bent to exploit the sugarcane growers.

It may be noted that the sugar millers prefer late announcement of sugarcane support price and late start of the crushing season for drying up of the standing sugarcane crop so that its weight is reduced without affecting its sugar content. However, the sugarcane growers are punished when their dried up crop fetches less amount due to its reduced weight.
