Karachi: On the recommendation of Provincial Procurement Committee, Health Department Sindh has again gave powers to the medical superintendents of government hospitals to purchase medicines for next three months to avoid drug shortage in public healthcare institutes, reliable sources of health department .
Earlier, Health Department Sindh had withdrawn the powers of medicine purchase from the medical superintendents of governments run hospitals over complaints of corruption and constituted a Provincial Procurement Committee under the supervision of Vice Chancellor Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Prof Dr Tariq Rafi for purchasing medicines for public hospitals on central basis for the year 2014-15.
In this regard health department had directed the heads of government hospitals to send the detailed report about their medicines required for this year and the department would buy these medicines in the light of hospitals demands. The department would purchase the medicines on same rate for the government hospitals on central basis and this decision would help to retaining a fixed rate of medicines throughout the province.
But on the recommendation of provincial procurement committee the health department again gave the powers the medical superintendents of public health institutions to purchase medicines for next three months to avoid shortage of medicines in healthcares in coming months. The heads of public institutions have been advised to purchase medicines on previous year’s rates.
Medical Superintendents of various government hospitals have showed their dismay over the decision of health department for purchasing medicines on previous year’s rates as the rates of various medicines have increased in 2014 as compared to last years.
Head of Provincial Procurement Committee & VC JSMU Prof Dr Tariq Rafi when contacted confirmed the development and said the provincial government under the lights of recommendations has allowed the heads of public healthcares to purchases medicines required for next three months in order to avoid shortage of drugs in hospitals due to delay of release of budgetary funds.
