Minister denies Chingchi rickshaw regularization

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sikander Mandhro on Monday denied reports of regularization of CNG Rickshaws and said that government was not mulling over any move to regularize the Chingchi rickshaws.

He said that the province was working on concrete projects like mass transit program, Karachi circular railway and other schemes in order to resolve public transport issues in the city.

Meanwhile, speaking on condition of anonymity, a transport department official told PPI that a committee, supervised by excise and taxation secretary to take decision on the fate of Chingchi rickshaws, has recommended for their regularization; however, traffic police officials and transporters were creating hindrances in it.

A traffic police DSP confided to PPI that the motor vehicle inspection department had termed Chingchi rickshaws as unfit to be run on the city roads. They cited lack of balance and safety measures a major hindrance in recognizing this vehicle as public transport.
