KARACHI: Senior Director Municipal Utility Charges & Taxes (MUCT) Fuzail Bukhari on Wednesday said MUCT was a profitable department as it was earning more money every year after it expanded its billing network in the city.
“It is third year of our department after it first started functioning in 2012. In 2012-13 we earned Rs180 million and in 2013-14 we earned more than Rs250m by just 15-20 percent recovery of bills in the city. The trend shows that this year we would of course earn a lucrative amount as we are trying to recover bill from more people,” he said.
He said that in any case people have to pay the bill otherwise they would not be able to legally deal for their property.
Bukhari said that MUCT charged bills for fire and municipal services. Earlier charges for fire services were received by Karachi Water & Sewerage Board, but after the formation of MUCT department the recovery of fire services charges were added to MUCT’s responsibilities. The bills were issued quarterly.
This should be noted here that despite imposing these charges the department of municipal services was not able to provide commendable services in the city as people every so often tend to lament over the issue of garbage and litter scattered in streets and at significant places.
This could even be witnessed just behind the Sindh Secretariat’s Tughlaq House Building, where garbage that is blocking the road and spreading diseases could not be removed despite commissioner of Karachi’s taking notice. The mounds of garbage were also a threat to the security of such an important place where a bomb could easily be planted under the garbage.
