National Mass Spectrometry facility setup at ICCBS

Karachi: “The International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK), has setup the national mass spectrometry facility at the ICCBS-UoK.

The national-level facility is established with the help of the UK organization, Recycling Organisation for Research Opportunities (RORO). As many as seven latestmass spectrometers have also been donated to ICCBS-UoK by RORO.”

Director ICCBS-UoK Prof. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Choudhary expressed these views while speaking at an official meeting held last week at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, UoK. He said that Giles Edwards, the Founder Trustee and Technical Director of RORO, had visited the University several times for the setup of this unique national facility at the ICCBS.

“RORO has donated 7 mass spectrometers to the ICCBS which are under installation process. This facility will be opened soon to the all researchers of Pakistan to help them in their research projects.“

It is important to note that the mass spectrometry is a key method routinely applied in pollution control, food control, forensic science, natural products or process monitoring and many others, he said.

The most recent applications of mass spectrometry are mostly oriented towards biochemical problems, such as proteome, metabolome, high throughput drug discovery and metabolism and playing crucial rule for the early stage detection of complex diseases like cancer.
